I like Rob Zombie’s movies – there, I said it!

Ok, The Devil’s Rejects DVD has been out for some time but I just had a chance to watch it…about time, too since it’s been on my shelf for about a year! Damn, that two-disc set rocks! I only saw this film once in the theaters and walked away thinking it was decent and though I enjoyed it, I wasn’t blown away. That said, I like Rob Zombie’s work and was surprised to see just how much of a departure The Devil’s Rejects was from House of 1000 Corpses…perhaps that’s why it didn’t grab me at first, because I wasn’t sure what to make of it.
However, the DVD really changed my view of the entire film. I enjoyed it much more the second time around and the documentary disc completely blew me away. It’s rare to see such an in-depth documentary accompanying any film, let alone a horror film. Not only did I take away a greater appreciation for the making of the film, I gained more respect for Rob Zombie as a filmmaker.
Face it, you either love the guy or you hate him. But honestly, both sides have to agree that Rob Zombie is a man with vision and the talent to bring that to the screen. You don’t have to like his films to know that. Plus, he’s totally willing to admit mistakes and be frank with what he likes and doesn’t like which are honorable traits for anyone.
So, when you’re at the theaters next week watching Halloween (and you know you will be – even if you hate RZ), give it a chance and open your mind to what he has to say. You don’t have to like it, but don’t put it down based on any pre-conceived notions you might have concerning his films. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m looking forward to this movie. As a diehard fan of the original (diehard is an understatement – it is THE reason I’m into horror), I thought it was too sacred to “remake”. But I’m willing to let that go to see what someone else can do with it. We all know the sequels haven’t done the series justice…so how bad can this one be?
I agree with you on Devils Rejects and RZ in general. It took the 2nd time of watching the Devils Rejects for me to really like it. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for tonight…you’re right – you love him or you hate him. The only reviews I’ve seen have either completely praised his Halloween – or completely bashed his Halloween.
by the way – any chance of some new shirts going on clearance any time soon? I check for it religiously.
Same here…I agree with Ben. I really enjoyed ‘..1000 Corpses’ and was really interested in how RZ was to follow that up. ‘Devil’s Rejects’ was a really good take on the dreaded SEQUEL. It was the same, but also a very different movie at the same time. And after watching the 2nd disc, my eyes were opened much wider to the genius of RZ and his vision of what a horror movie can be. That’s why I got pretty excited to hear he was doing Halloween….I knew he wasn’t going to bastardize the whole franchise and I thought he did an awesome job. I really like where he went with Michael’s origins and background. And I can’t wait for THAT dvd to come out just to see the extras.
I agree with all of you guys. i beleive rz filmmaking is actually quite good. i loved the remake of halloween. Showing michaels origins and then starting the film were the original took place about 45 minutes into the movie was just… genious really. i loved it and i am looking forward to his next project
a little late here…but i loved house of 1000 when it came out, i thought to myself, what a great, bloody horror movie! i mean it didnt take itself seriously, it had great cameos, and the acting was cheese but good cheese. it gave me what i needed. then i saw a sneak preview for the devils rejects when i bought the saw dvd and i wasnt too pleased with it…i mean it basically showed the entire beginning with the shootout and i wasnt interested…but a good horror movie watching bud of mine and i went the day after it opened (after promising my other friend to watch the island (she loves ewan mcgregor) on friday) and what we witnessed in that theatre was simply put, genius. i always tell people that movie is in my top five favorite horror movies of all time…i mean it was like rob zombie went to film school, the scenes were great, the cameos (once again) and the violence were so well done, i mean it shocked and it rocked and it rolled. i have to say honestly that the ending with free bird is one of the most phenomenal endings ive ever seen on film, it went right along with bonnie and clyde! blaze of glory…
sadly saying that after seeing the remake of halloween that rob did i wasnt too pleased with the outcome, maybe thats another movie i need to watch again…i just found that i didnt care enough about anyone in that movie, i didnt care about how michael turned into a murderer…i just didnt care at all. and i think its due to the fact that i loved the devils rejects so badly that i felt he really couldnt do any better than that.
but i will give the movie another watch and i will end up seeing whatever rob does in the future.
I really enjoy Rob Zombies movies.I think that his talent, and quality grows with each new movie.I did not like House of 1000 corpses very much, but loved the Devils Rejects.
Alot of hardcore fans of the original Halloween will more than likely never give him a chance,BUT were these same fans also complaining about the likes of Halloween Resurrection?
My opinion is that if Rob Z had not made his Halloween movies someone else with less passion would have made them, and we would be given another Halloween Resurrection,or another run of the mill horror movie made just to make some money off of teens running to the theaters on friday nights(think my bloody valentine 3D,the final destination, prom night,etc..)
I love how his movies seem real. The look isnt glossy,he doesnt use the newest hit songs, the actors dont look like abercrombie models, and the villains look like people that you would think of when picturing real life murderers.
The only thing that initially bothered me about a few of his movies was the language.Stepping back and thinking about it,the language really isnt any worse than a normal rated R movie,or a lil wayne cd(and he seems to be pretty popular with everyone right now).On top of that ,arent horror movies supposed to be a little offensive, and give you a dirty, uneasy feeling?I think Hollywood has lost sight of that, and make too many politically correct horror movies.
