Seth Godin’s recent book challenges everyone to take a risk, to move away from conformity to ingenuity, to stop looking for a map and…to Poke the Box.
Ok, that may sound vulgar (I hear you snickering…) but the notion itself is worth some reflection.
We’ve all got great ideas. And we all have an infinite supply of excuses why not to act on them. Too busy, have kids, not enough money, the economy is bad, it might fail, people will make fun of me, etc ad nausea. And yet, while you’re busy making excuses, someone else has started something. Someone has been able to put all their excuses aside and ask the only question that matters, “why not?” And then they poke the box…
This past weekend at SXSW, Seth and his team collected the best stories from the even and organized them into an ebook. Here is a link that free ebook with “50 inspiring stories about taking initiative from accomplished entrepreneurs and up-and-coming stars.”
It’s short, and to the point…. Read it and get inspired to poke the box.
And if you’ve ever poked the box yourself, feel free to post your experience here.
Every kid dreams about what he or she wants to do when they grow up. And when they do, I don’t think they imagine punching a clock, or sitting in a cubicle, or even looking forward to their lunch break every day. They dream about a happy life, doing something exciting like being an astronaut, or a firefighter.
I’ve always loved horror. Since I was 4 years old, it has been a constant in my life. And while I had many different interests growing up, I always dreamed that someday, somehow, I would get to do something related to horror. And here I am years later, waking up every day doing work that makes my inner child smile with delight. And while I’ve never worked harder in my life, I’ve also never had as much fun, or have felt so fulfilled.
So take a moment and think about what you’re doing in your life right now. Are you doing something you imagined you’d be doing as a kid?
If the answer is no, then you might want to think about a change. Because life is too short. The longer you wait to do what you want, the less time you’ll have to do it. And if you’re worried about the risk — don’t. The greatest risk is not taking a chance and getting stuck where you are now.
So go, do what you love. Follow your passion. Your inner child will thank you.
When I was a kid, my favorite time of year was from June-December. Ok, I guess that’s half the year. But I just loved summers (i.e. no school), and that led to fall and of course, Halloween – my favorite time of year. But after that was Thanksgiving and then finally, Christmas. It was like June was the apex of that first giant hill of a roller coaster, and the rest of the year was downhill…wind in your face and all. But like a roller coaster, it was always over before I knew it. And then it was back up that long hill (click, click, click) of January through May before I could experience the rush again.
So, with another successful Monster Mania behind us, we loaded up the van Sunday evening and headed off to dinner with friends. We always stay at the hotel one extra night as it gives us time relax after a stressful weekend, and rest up for the ride home the next day.
And while the evening started off great, it didn’t end so well… read more…

As you may – or may not – know, this weekend Fright-Rags and The Dryden Theatre at the George Eastman House will be paying a special tribute to Tom Atkins and Fred Dekker. Friday, July 16 will be An Evening With Tom Atkins, featuring two of his classic films – The Fog and Halloween III Season of the Witch (both presented in 35mm!) Tom will be there in attendance for a Q&A after both films.
Then on Saturday, July 17 we will have An Evening With Fred Dekker featuring his most beloved films Monster Squad (35mm) and Night of the Creeps (The Director’s Cut – shown digitally). Fred will be in attendance for a Q&A after both films, also accompanied by Tom Atkins after Night of the Creeps.
Now, I understand that many of you may not be able to make it out to both – or either – of these events. After all Rochester, NY isn’t the closest city to everyone. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t be a part of it… Keep reading to find out how you can get a piece of the action for yourself!

I spent probably as much time at the library when I was a kid as I spent at the video store. The main reason was, of course, to do research for homework. We had this really cool old church at the top of the hill down the road from my house that served as the local library. It had the old parish cemetery right on the grounds, and was even said to be haunted. read more…
