Vote on a New Design : Part Three : Inks and Text

2009 May 29
by Ben

Another week…another round of voting! So this week, we now have the final inks for the design, but we still need to decide on the text layout. Since the text was the subject of a much heated debate last time, I wanted to give you the option to pick from a few different styles. And although this particular image was the clear winner, I also wanted to present an option WITHOUT TEXT, just in case you were in favor of that over any of these text styles. So, check them out below and cast your vote! Don’t forget to comment too!

I like the quote too but it does seem to muddle up the image, since the design has writing within it.
    No TEXT LOOKS THE BEST!

Definitely Version 4: the text looks cheesy and detracts from the overall image.

i vote for image 1 ben, i love the distressed look. the design does look cool with or without txt but ithink i prefer it with txt. i was a choice between 1 and 2 for me. the dripping text looks cool, but id go for the distressed text!

cant wait to see it with colour!

  4. May 29, 2009

    Number one most definitely!

#1 or #4 is fine with me. I voted for #1 because I felt the text blocking on that version looked the best, but if the vote swings to no next it’s fine as well. I have to were a uniform at my job anyways so it doesn’t matter to me if the line is on there or not. Keep up the good work!

  6. May 29, 2009

I also think having the text on the back would be a great idea in the distressed font. But I chose #4 just because you don’t always need the classic lines. I’d rather wear the shirt and have someone come up and quote the line to me without it being in front of their eyes. Much cooler in my opinion.

  7. May 29, 2009

I voted for the first design with the distressed text, but you can’t go wrong with the textless version either. Great design overall!

I still love the no text shirt. The ones with text make the shirt very busy.
If a text shirt does win lets hope its #1 and lets place the text on the back!

  9. May 29, 2009

I voted no text. Like everyone else, I love the quote, but maybe it’s just TOO BIG on the shirt. The text at the bottom and the font used is not good IMO.

  10. May 29, 2009

Please, no text! A picture is worth 1000 words, remember?! VOTE #4.

  11. May 29, 2009

If the “future text” was on top of the image instead of below, that would get my vote. As it is, I voted for the distressed text. I sure hope the “no text” doesn’t get the vote. The text is the reason I love this shirt!

Not a big fan of the faded text, but I love the drippy text!

I actually am not a great fan of the graphic….it is too cartoon for me. The text is fine and is a great line. Maybe a graphic on front, text on back. Still not a huge fan of the artwork, mostly because of the depiction of Piper.

Really do like #1 and #4. Would be really cool to have that quote on the back of the shirt. With the design on the front.

  15. May 29, 2009

I would have to go with no text. While it’s a great quote from the movie, it really does draw your eyes away from the image itself. I think the text on the billboards do enough for the shirt anyway.

  16. May 29, 2009

I like #1 although I think it would look better with solid text instead of distressed text. Nothing else on the artwork is distressed, it just looks a little out of place.

Classic quote or not, I think the text only serves to cheapen an otherwise excellent design–Ryan nailed it when he said it gives the shirt a Spencers feel. The billboards provide all this shirt needs in the way of words.

VOTE for #4!!!!!!!!!!!! The design is going to be amazing once the color is added people! Don’t fuck it up with the 121 word quote!!! Adding the quote seriously dumbs the design down. The brilliant thing about making a They Live shirt is the fact that you’re going to have people come up to you who recognize the design and offer up that quote verbatim, so adding it to the shirt is overkill and way too obvious. AND adding the skeleton talking into his watch was much needed and much appreciated. It’s time for you girls and ghouls to step it up and cock block the text! Above, Ryan mentioned that the shirt with the text added was just cheese-a-rific enough to make it onto the shelves at his local Spencer’s Gifts and I’d have to agree. We should be raising the bar, not lowering it.

Adding text to this shirt will ruin the design.

The text is absolutely needed IMO, I get what people are saying about it cluttering the design, but if so, then what’s wrong with design 3, where the text is at the bottom of the design? Personally though, I went with design 1 and am strongly pulling for that, as that would make it a must buy for me…

I just figured the drippy text looks like chewed bubble gum. I do agree with everyone saying that it clutters the design though. I like the idea I read on someone elses comment about putting the tagline on the back, that would be best in my opinion. Then you get the best of both worlds without the clutter.

I voted number four…no text. But I really do think that, as has been suggested before, putting the text on the back would be a great compromise…that way it doesn’t take away from the design, but it’s still there.

There is a lot of truth hidden in this movie for instance when the police are working with the military! I remember how scary this seen was and now this happens every day in America! For instance hurricane Katrina! This is a violation of the posse comitatus act of 1878 that says by law military and police shall not work together ever! Wake up people we are living in a “THEY LIVE” style police state here in America There are literally tent cities all over the nation right now and people are being forced off just like in the movie. On top of that the government is using ELF technology on us in order to keep us asleep like the satellite in the movie that says “SLEEP SLEEP” If you think I’m crazy just Google or YOU TUBE IT. I like BEN’S they live shirts because they have a real message. Wake up people we are loosing our country to a bunch of off shore banker criminal elite and soon the NEW WORLD ORDER will rule with a wicked hand it’s already begun. That is why Design 1 is the best. Cause you have both the picture and the words-but the words aren’t super bold or anything. They kinda just fade into the picture. The other designs (with words) I think just makes the picture too busy. But I would HATE to have this shirt without the line. Though I wouldn’t mind the idea of having the line on the back-being not an option-I’m gonna stick to having to have both the line and the picture. But having the words faded.

  27. May 29, 2009

NO TEXT!!!!! it’s expected, so don’t do it!! If i had to pick one with text, the 3rd one would be the way to go. the text on top is distracting to the image and the fonts aren’t all that….at least the 3rd one looks a bit futuristic and doesn’t take away.

I picked design 4 with no text. I love the catchphrase, but just think the none text looks cooler.

Love the basic idea of the glasses being reflective, not sure if it really works though. Compare the glasses to the same image in Part 2 and they look incredibly, incredibly disproportionate now. Also I dig definition but the crosshatching and dark pencil lines make for a much more depth and texture creating very gritty looking characters. Again compare to designs from Part 2. Possibly a happy medium between computer and ink rendering. Love that this design got picked though. It screams, “EPIC WIDESCREEN CINEMA” at me and defines the feel of the movie to a tee. You had to keep those Orwellian undertones with the billboards!

…OCD much!!? Roddy’s face looks a bit out of whack now in comparison to the previous designs from Part 2 as well

Okay…last thing, sorry. The design in Part 2 looks way dirtier and darker and gives just the right amount of realism needed to draw you in as a design. The aliens in throughout design 3 look freakin’ awesome now! Perhaps you could create a parallel between Roddy and the aliens that gives each their own distinctive feel whilst retaining cohesion within the design. Also you could use this Part 2 and Part 3 parallel between Roddy and the aliens as a way to spacially meld them. The fact the aliens are now down the bottom of the screen and cleanly defined now makes them almost shadowed by the cityscape, and I hope this doesn’t sound too wanky but conveys their rigidity and militarization. If Roddy was left with that Design 2 feel it would convey the anomalous and rebellious nature of the character very well…plus it just looks a crap load better. I say stick with the dark glasses on him as well..makes him look more ominous …AND THAT’S ALL HE SAID! *sigh*

IN CLOSING (for real now)…everything looks incredibly awesome except for Roddy…Design 2 him and you’ll be kicking arse and taking t-shirt orders!!

As I mentioned in the last vote – if it has “ass” on it, that guarantees I can’t wear it at work or around kids.

In addition, that really long quote takes up too much space. I’m with Algee – if text needs to be there, then it should be:

    ā€œ. . . and I’m all out of bubblegum!ā€

Had to go with #4. As I’ve said in the past text dosent bother me on alot of these shirts, in fact I enjoy the phrases, but there is soooo much to look at on this particular design already and that line is great but entirely too long with everything else thats on there. I think it actually takes away from the design. I would rather look at the cool ass aliens but my eyes always get drawn to that big ole text first.

I love them all…but i voted for the fourth one. #3 is cool because the text is on the bottom. But i had to go with #4. I do think that of all the great comment ideas, the text “..and i’m all out of bubblegum.” would be fun. But it’s a great design. thanks, and i look foreward to seeing it in color..

I voted for version one. The Tag Line is classic, and the distressed text adds a lot to the design.

  38. June 1, 2009

I am in the no-text camp, as well. If it must be I’d say futuristic text, the font captures the idea of the film and the 80′s style of the film. Pseudo-futurist if you like; futuristic for the 80′s.
    The distressed look seems anachronistic.
I second (or whatever, there’s a bunch of comments) the idea of creating both text and no-text. Everyone would be pleased and you would totally sell a ton more. $$$
    No Text!

I like the text style in the first one. But I think it looks better on the bottom of the shirt. In the first design the text starts lower on the left side, and slants higher to the right- personally I think use the fourth design, slide the design up higer and have the text start slanted higher on the left and slant down to the right, somewhat wrapping the bottom image shape.
