Vote on a New Design : Part Three : Inks and Text
2009 May 29
Another week…another round of voting! So this week, we now have the final inks for the design, but we still need to decide on the text layout. Since the text was the subject of a much heated debate last time, I wanted to give you the option to pick from a few different styles. And although this particular image was the clear winner, I also wanted to present an option WITHOUT TEXT, just in case you were in favor of that over any of these text styles. So, check them out below and cast your vote! Don’t forget to comment too!
———— Version 01 ————

———— VERSION 02 ————

———— VERSION 03 ————

———— VERSION 04 ————

Choose wisely – you have until Wednesday, June 3! And stay tuned to the next round where we finally get to some COLOR!
Which text layout do you like best?
- Version 4 (no text) (38%, 388 Votes)
- Version 1 (distressed text) (38%, 387 Votes)
- Version 2 (gooey, drippy text) (20%, 199 Votes)
- Version 3 (futuristic text) (4%, 98 Votes)

wow- this is a close vote. Number one looks very classic to me Beb
I think it looks best with no text. It’s a great line, it always gets a laugh no matter how cheesy, but it’s also a LONG line and sorta clutters up the picture in my opinion. The fourth design is best for sure.
#1
I’ve changed my mind You gotta have the tagline it defines the movie. even though it swears and I wouldn’t be able to wear it at work or in front of my kids..ha! still gotta have that tagline.
I agree with Jason M, think the line (as good as it is) takes all the focus away from the design. A fifth option with just THEY LIVE would have been my choice!!
I love the design, BUT, I hate the text. I am fimly in the no text camp. It’s a great line, and a great design, but I’ll only be buying one if it doesn’t have text. I just think that the text clutters the designs too much. Any chance of offering it with AND without text to please eveyone?
The bold text captures the essence of the film, in my opinion.
Got to be number 4. If it absolutely has to have text I’d vote for design 1, but I agree with Jason M about the text making it a little cluttered.
Can someone invent a subliminal “VOTE FOR NUMBER 4″ banner ad that you only see with special glasses?
Why not put the tag line on the back?
The text is just too much. One option not discussed would be to just use:
“. . . and I’m all out of bubblegum!”
Done in future text, on the bottom of the picture.
That would be good for those who know the line, and a very good conversation starter for those who don’t. Since that was not part of the vote, the only one I like is number four.
Thanks.
I voted for 4, but I think the text would be good on the back! Not in the drippy bubble gum font though. Could do with him looking a bit more like Roddy Piper. Also the eyes don’t look anywhere as creepy as they do in the film, are these staying in black and white or will the final designs be in colour- i think they eyes will be lost without colour. Amazing process, thanks!
I’m liking the fact that version 2 is different from anything you’ve seen before!
The text is cool and I think no text looks like it needs something.
It’s a great line and should be on the shirt, people will look!
I agree, the text takes up too much room on this great sketch..
I like it white on black and version 4 for sure.
I think it would be great to put the line on the back of the shirt.
The illo is looking great! I’ve been a fan of no text since the beginning, and I agree with Jason M regarding the length of the quote. It’s just too much to read. IMO, the layout looks a lot cleaner with no words – the quote makes it look more like something you’d find at Spencer gifts than from the kick-ass folks at Fright Rags.
(ps – if you end up going with design #1, I’d distress the font even more.)
^^I think jason has hit the nail on the head there.
NO Text, Hands down…
Although if it HAS to HAve text, I go with #1. Gooey text is way overused right now in the shirt world. and the one with text at the bottom is just WAY too bottom heavy.
I know its too late now… but, after looking at this again, It might look cool to have NO TEXT and lower the design a bit more and have a faded back close up of his Sunglasses.
Just a Thought.

I love the text on top, not sure if the distressed look is the best though. It looks great in just black and white.
I go with no text. It’s so clean and crisp. I love the line, but will def get a no text shirt for sure.
My first instinct was to go with the no text feature, but my son says that, that line is important to the movie and to piper fans. The text definitely looks the best on design # 1.
I am very amused here reading all the talk about the text making the shirt look cluttered or taking up too much room LMAO.
Ummmmmm….Aliens, buildings, signs, spaceships and a gun toting wrestler all crammed together haven’t done that already? (that is not a slam on the either) Does taking out the words actually make it looks less busy? Not to me. I vote #1.
I hope the artist uses very minimal colour (eyes only).
If I had one complaint about the design, it’s that the front Alien looks too mean/scary. I don’t recall them looking that ferocious in the movie.
Definitely version 2. That font gives the design this Grindhouse/cheesy horror type feel, which I am a big fan of. I am not a big fan of how the text is laid out though. It would look cool if the text was on the back of the shirt in that font with just the design up front.
I wish the eyes were shaded.
I do love gooey lettering…but the more I look at the design…the picture tends to speak for itself. Anyone who knows, will get it with out text aid.
But I do love gooey text…I suppose the abbreviated phrase, “All Outta Bubblegum”, located on the back, wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
I pick #4.
!
Not a fan of the text at all.
If anything, maybe print it on the back.
But I agree with several people who have pointed out that it takes away from the design.
I think adding text is unnecessary. Very few shirts on the site have text and they look great.
Design 4 is definitely the best. Like others said, the text takes away from the bad ass art and makes it a bit cluttered.
Yah, the text looks way too cluttery.
I like the 1st design. Looks epic and stylish enough
I’ve got to go with #4 – no text. I was originally in favor of having the quote on the back, and still think that would be a good choice (if printing on the back is a viable option — would that raise the price tag?). If there must be text on the front, I like the look of the distressed letters (#1) best.
(Just in case #3 wins, make sure to change “came” to “have come.”)
1 and 3 were freaking close! I gave it to 1 though. The only thing that I thought needed to be fixed was clearing up the H in “Have”. I can barely tell what letter it is. It may be obvious, but it should still be legible.
i think putting only the text of “and i’m all out of bubblegum” on the back of the shirt is the best way to go. it pleases everybody.
I agree—version 4, with the text on the back.
It only get’s better ! keep up the good work.
While putting it on the back might be a good idea, that means flipping the shirt over and burning another screen which most likely would up your cost of the shirt as well as take more time to screen because you would have to dry the shirt, then flip it and rescreen the back and then let that dry also. I voted for #1.
I agree, I almost voted the last one with no text but the text fits perfectly and makes it ‘complete’ so to speak so that is why I voted on the first one…it’s old skool and me likes!
Drippy text! Why not go all the way to maximum cheese!?!
The design is really awesome. I think the text draws away from that. #4 for sure.
Went with #3. But as long as the text is there I’m happy.
Make something red
really awesome, only reason I’m hoping for the no text one is my work isn’t going ot be to happy with the tag line haha
I love 1 and even number 4 with no text – if you know the movie, you’ll get the shirt.
Great designs – can’t wait till it’s out – my hubby will love this!
I like them all. I voted for the underdog though. Maybe it’ll make a come back.
I love the movie I love the picture, and I love the quote in the movie, but it does not worlk on the shirt. Super ultra busy is not what I want in a horror shirt. Imahgine if the Killer Klowns shirt had a bunch of words on it…ity would tip it way over the top. I like my clothing simple though…not all over print. My two cents…
Thanks for the shirtsw at all though. Got me and two cool ass customers in my Haight Street store talking. Very cool.
PS- Make the damn WICKER MAN design please please please. I will buy 2.
I say no text because as much as I love the movie and the quote, I don’t really want to walk around town with a shirt that says “…And I’m All Out Of Bubble Gum” in big letters.
T-SHIRT ARE KICKASSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The artwork is good, but too busy with too many things going on to support the addition of text. How about putting the text on back… or… giving people the option of having thetext on back for some extra $ or leaving it blank,
I gotta say, I am sticking with version one, as I think that line just needs to be there. But if the no text wins or comes close, you might want to consider putting the text on the back, as that seems like a great compromise.
the text is a big distraction taking away from the excellent artwork.Put the text on the back definitely!
My vote goes to #4. This image has so much detail going on already, it would be a tad bit of oversaturation to add text to it as well. I like the quote but the image has a lot of words on it already in the background. Some loyal patrons may have objections to wear a shirt that has the word “ass” on it since it’s not very socially acceptable. I think it may hold back the ability of the shirt to be a big seller IMO. I love that you took my opinion on the alien speaking into the watch and added that. It looks awesome. Give me credit lol.. just kidding. Great job as always.

The quote NEEDS to be there, I see allot of you are a fan of the no text version, but unfortunately it just doesn’t give anyone who sees the shirt a reason to start a conversion about it or comment “Hey where did you get that awesome shirt, I love that movie”
If you have the quote people will wanna read it and laugh, though allot will refer to Duke Nukem.
I think you should put the text on the back, even if you have to raise the price of the shirt, id still buy it
