Vote on a New Design : Part Two : Composition

2009 May 18
by Ben

In part one,  you voiced your opinion on what sketch you wanted to see made into the next Fright-Rags design. Now I need your help with the composition! So keep reading to find out what won out, and to vote on how you’d like to see it on the shirt!

Ok, the votes are in and boy was it a close one! But They Live won out by a hair…maybe it was the subliminal messages it sent out telling you to vote for it (should have worn your sunglasses!). I know some of you won’t be too happy about the final vote, but I would like to add that just because the others lost, doesn’t mean they won’t be developed into a design… I’m not making any promises or guarantees, but I will say that I do listen to you and take all comments/thoughts into consideration. So stay tuned…you may just be surprised.

That said, this series is about what you voted on. And in the first round, this sketch won:

2. They Live

Many of you had opinions on what should be done with this particular design, so I took them all to Matt (the artist) and asked him to come up with a few more iterations on the same design. The next day I opened my email and was pleasantly surprised to see four more sketches, all different, but based on the same theme. Take a look at them below!

So here is my question:  What design do you like best?

I will accept votes until this Friday (May 22), at which point I will turn over the winning sketch to Matt where he will refine the design even further for round 3, this time will color!

Make sure to choose wisely…only one will make it to the next round. Also, take a moment to post your comments below…we love reading them!

Which composition do you like best?

  • IMAGE 02 (37%, 365 Votes)
  • IMAGE 04 (23%, 226 Votes)
  • IMAGE 03 (21%, 204 Votes)
  • IMAGE 01 (19%, 186 Votes)

Total Voters: 981

Love 1 and 3. I hope whatever design you choose that it does not contain text. I love “They Live,” but wouldn’t buy one with the movie text. That comes up in the conversation when someone sees my shirt…

I love #4 with the shotgun and quote, but it would be so much better if the design didn’t cover the text, or it would also be great if you put the text on the back of the shirt.

l think the text gives it that great “b-movie” feel. Very appropriate in my opinion. Also looks very appealing proportionally to me.

l definitely hope three wins. l know 20 other people who would snag one.

Without a doubt #2 is the best design! It has four great features that seperate it from the bunch. It has the great line above the graphic, it has Roddy Piper with boomstick in hand, it has the various aliens and the subliminal billboards. All of these make #2 the most creative, eye-catching design. Go #2!

I wanted to vote for image #2( but the computer wouldnt let me , it said that i already did, even though i did not ?), i like how u guys corrected the aliens this time from those skeletons. i picked 2 b/c i like the image and i also like the quote, its a funny quote from the movie that people will be intrigued to see it when u wear it and wonder what movie thats from , or what it means. =)i cant wait to see it in color. my second choice would be #1 , only b/c it shows another classic scene from the movie… but.. whats wrong with the picture is that in the sunglasses the reflection should be of normal people not the aliens, b/c u see the aliens when u wear the sunglasses. but i do like the aliens on the front rt side.

I really liked designs 3 and 4 the best. I chose image 3 because it had no text. It’s not that I don’t like text on shirts but in this case I think the design is stronger without it. One question, will we ever see a Hell comes to Frogtown design? It’s another Piper classic!

Even tough I don’t know the movie (Yeah I know i don’t know my classics… or at least not ALL of them)#3 t-shirt makes me wish I knew this movie. Even tough I already heard the catch phrase in Duke Nukem, I never knew where it came from but.. there is too many words to get them all on a shirt wich means it doesn’t belong on any designs. Well, this is just my opinion.

The images are great but all that wording is too busy, is tired, it is so JCPENNEY and SEARS T-shirts styles (WITH ALL THE WORDINGS). IF YOU GOING TO HAVE WORDS JUST PUT JOHN CARPENTER’S THEY LIVE. OTHERWISE YOU GOING TO HAVE A SHIRT WITH TACKY WORDINGS.

1 or 3, no text please.

It’s pretty even between the first and the third. The text is far too distracting and tacky. The image is enough to convey the essence of the movie.

Unfortunately I won’t buy this design if it has that text on it, it would be a shame too, cause I recently watched this movie and fell in love with it.

I’m stoked design 2 is gettin the vote. That design is da shit!

    B Dead.

I like #2 hands down. As far as the text is concerned be sure you have it correct, and it would work very nicely on the back. Two sided shirts can be cool and get that extra bit of attention.

I voted for number one, but I will be happy purchasing any version that has no text. I like the quote, but it seems too much for the t-shirt, IMO. Thanks for the opportunity to help choose.

would another quote/slogan in the film be better?

    “They Live, We Sleep”

    Just a thought.

I voted for #3. I like the full scale Roddy, not just the face. Even though we lose the emphasis of the human image of the aliens in the sunglasses its ok. I dont like the text at all; just my opinion. If you are going to have any text then make it something that revolves around the plot or the glasses themselves.
One thing that is missing and shouldn’t be overlooked is the way that the aliens communicated to their ships and colleagues.. by talking into their watches. Maybe have one of the aliens towards the back doing that.

I loved all the choices. But for me it is between #1 and #2. If you’re going without text, then #no.1 is perfect. With text, it has to be #no.2….now i voted for number 2, but i had to…i just love that line!!!

If you are doing this movie you HAVE to have that quote. No questions about it. I voted for #2 but I also liked #4. I picked #2 just because it reminded me of an old school b-horror movie poster with the large spaced out lettering.
But yeah-either #2 or #4-but it just got to have the quote..it’s just got to.

p.s.-I will be buying this shirt-with or without wording :-)

I thought #1 was cool, #2 was my second choice. The reflection in the glasses are cool in #1 as it is a definite nod to the film. The line is #2 is classic. Either would be cool.

voted 3 because the text seems a little tacky, but i’d still buy 2 when it’s done (at this stage). someone else suggested that the text be put on the back which i think is a great idea but still, it goes with the image. (: great designs in all. (:

  22. May 22, 2009

I have read this in a number of other posts, but I think Justine (post 4) put it perfectly. The catchphrase would just look tacky and cheap. Like it was coming from someone who was trying to cash in on the film as opposed to actually honoring it. If there has to be text put on the back, maybe even treating it as an actual quote with “-John Nada” or something. Either way take the text off the front!
    Vote Image 3!

3rd one is so awesome, but it doesn’t look as if it’ll win. Aw well.

By the way, I really like Kyle T.’s idea of putting the text on the back, and treating it as an actual quote, instead of just a catchphrase. I think it would class it up a bit :)

    They all rock … its a toss-up between #3 & #4 for me

I liked the one where he is stopping on the creature the best. But I would have liked it even better if had that shaded kinda design like on Image 1
