Vote on a New Design : Part Two : Composition

2009 May 18
by Ben

In part one,  you voiced your opinion on what sketch you wanted to see made into the next Fright-Rags design. Now I need your help with the composition! So keep reading to find out what won out, and to vote on how you’d like to see it on the shirt!

Ok, the votes are in and boy was it a close one! But They Live won out by a hair…maybe it was the subliminal messages it sent out telling you to vote for it (should have worn your sunglasses!). I know some of you won’t be too happy about the final vote, but I would like to add that just because the others lost, doesn’t mean they won’t be developed into a design… I’m not making any promises or guarantees, but I will say that I do listen to you and take all comments/thoughts into consideration. So stay tuned…you may just be surprised.

That said, this series is about what you voted on. And in the first round, this sketch won:

2. They Live

Many of you had opinions on what should be done with this particular design, so I took them all to Matt (the artist) and asked him to come up with a few more iterations on the same design. The next day I opened my email and was pleasantly surprised to see four more sketches, all different, but based on the same theme. Take a look at them below!

So here is my question:  What design do you like best?

I will accept votes until this Friday (May 22), at which point I will turn over the winning sketch to Matt where he will refine the design even further for round 3, this time will color!

Make sure to choose wisely…only one will make it to the next round. Also, take a moment to post your comments below…we love reading them!

Which composition do you like best?

  • IMAGE 02 (37%, 365 Votes)
  • IMAGE 04 (23%, 226 Votes)
  • IMAGE 03 (21%, 204 Votes)
  • IMAGE 01 (19%, 186 Votes)

Total Voters: 981

I like #2. It has everything the other three have all wrapped up into one.

    Number 4…I love It…!!!
(I say print off the 2 most popular…you would sell both, no question!!!)

Number 1 – Far and away my favorite design. I give this one the edge over number 3, I like Roddy-peering-through-glasses more than shotgun-wielding-Roddy.

Number 2 – I don’t like this design so much with the quote, it’s just too much, too busy.

Number 3 – The artwork works better on this design, sans text, compared to number 2.

Number 4 – The quote works better with this design, since the artwork is more basic. But the other artwork feels like a better representation of the film.

I voted for #1, but #2 was a strong possibility as well. If one with text wins, though, PLEASE CORRECT THE QUOTE!

Again though, great work and thanks for keeping us in the loop.

i was bummed that Jaws didn’t make it but i am very pleased with the comps. it was a very tough decision between 1 and 3 but i went with 1. i personally think the text is cheesy and would ruin the artwork. we all know what this movie is and all of the one liners. i think with the text it crosses the line between awesome and Hot Topic esque fanboy crap. i’m one of those people who dislikes Army of Darkness solely because there are a bunch a douche bags wearing the stuff with “Hail to the king” written all over it and praising the film but have never even seen Evil Dead. i may be being to harsh but with that being said my point is, i wont buy it with text on it because ill feel like a douche. eh just my two cents, Great work!

I’m not a fan of the movie (I know, sacrilege!) but I am a fan of your product and don’t mind taking a moment to give suggestions. I’d go with the third design, but put the bubblegum quote on back like people here have said. That would really sum up what people love about this flick. One important thing: You really need to get the design of the aliens right. The tacky, over-the-top, sci-fi pulp magazine cover look of those faces is the iconography that people associate with They Live. If you miss the mark on the alien faces, I think the whole thing is sunk. Just my two cents.

Screened this movie for my Science Fiction film class a few weeks ago and, even though it’d been years since I had seen it, I had to show it and didn’t remember how over-the-top amazing it is. Needless to say (?), the film went over big with the class and the film has aged very gracefully. Look forward to the new shirt.

My They Live hoodie is a wardrobe staple.

Image #2 or Image #3 best represent the film:
Piper’s mullet, the shotgun, even the quote, are all essential to the film.

Disappointed Jaws didnt make it to the final cut but cant win em all I suppose! I have to go with #1 or #3 here. I voted for #1 because it summed up the whole movie for me. The sunglasses, the expression, the aliens. I personally dont mind quotes as most of my Fright Rags shirts that I have purchased so far have quotes. This particular one though, to me, makes it look too busy with possibly too much to look at.
I also want to say thanks for letting us fans in on this whole process. Really cool and another reason I love this site!

the first one is my choice but the one with the shotgun is nice but the shotgun leads your eye away from the composition. i agree with that there should be no text even though its winning..as a graphic designer the text doesn’t add anything to the composition and it resembles word art which is not good….please get rid of the text.

  14. May 18, 2009

can I pre-order yet? with this much effort, it’s going to be an amazing t-shirt. letting people vote is genius Ben. we can argue as much as we want about past designs but with these new ones its all on us. well, and you…. and the artist…. but at least we are in the mix now. thanks!

Image 1 is too cool for words. That said, I would like to offer a resounding “no text” vote.

Image four, by far…I usually prefer no text on FrightRags shirts, but this design is far and away the most eye-catching, and the most interesting.

I voted for number two. The Text, which I know is a huge selling factor for a lot of people, has that right Campy / Pulp feel that works! The inclusion of the OBEY signs in the background also ties in nicely with the OBEY hoodie and shirt! If #2 gets produced I’ll have to have both, just so I can wear them at the same time!

I too am a bit bummed JAWS didn’t make it. Ah well… here’s hoping for the future!
I chose design #1. IF the Aliens are a bit more refined, and definately if Hot Rod is better drawn. The other designs definately LOOK like him more, but someone who wouldn’t know the movie would assume he was with them (the aliens).
    What ever happened with Tarman????

image 3 for sure. as much as agree with the fact of the text-less shirt ideas…that quote is timeless and can’t be left out. not sure how i feel about the flying saucers in that design, but it’s a minor flaw IMHO. i also have the OBEY tee but would prolly have to buy design 3 if it wins.

  20. May 18, 2009

I think #4 gives an overall better feel of it. It makes you want to go rent the movie.

    Number 2 or Number 4
It has to have something about the bubblegum, that’s how people will initially recognize the shirt and say “Holy shit that’s funny, what does it mean?” and then they want one, or it’s a sweet inside joke to those of us who love the movie, then they want one as well.

  25. May 18, 2009

I’m Tellin Ya, Piper needs a “Hot Rod” Shirt.

  26. May 18, 2009

image #2 and this shirt MUST have the catchphrase right where it is.

It’s one of cinema’s top classic lines and it must be shared with the world. Mary and Joe Blow out there that look at the shirt won’t give a rat’s ass about it with just the image, but have the text on there and you got yourself some laughs and some conversation.

I definitely have to go with number 1, Piper holding his glasses reveals more about the movie than the others.

I didnt vote for this shirt.I think the jaws one.would have been a much bigger seller,as this one applys soley to the fans of this movie(i’m a piper fan,but i can picture a more colorful design with one of the others). But being as it is,either no. one or no. three.I think without the text.

I love all four designs. I had to choose #3 though. It just strikes me as the most iconic of the four. Now, if you decide to actually make more than one design of them, I would buy any of the four. They Live is one of my all time favorite Sci-fi movies, plus I am a HUGE Roddy Piper fan as well

  34. May 18, 2009

The big quote on #2 & #4 is just too campy. Reminds me of people who wear “funny shirts”. Keep it bad-ass. Keep it classy. Keep it sans text.

Image #3 definitely. Permission to be a bastard…the drawings are great..but a few points clawing at my grey matter…

    * The bubblegum slogan needs to be on the back of the shirt and the font rendering needs to be fixed up. All the fonts actually need to be fixed up. They look like they’ve been emblazoned straight out of Microsoft Word and tacked to the picture. I know they need to be read but they still need to adhere to the depth perceptions in different parts of the design

    * How the Piper is sketched in the rifle image looks way more defined. The well defined, starkness of that image conveys character very well. Although I like the focus on the glasses in #1 the drawing isn’t done as well. The aliens look amazing but need to be sharpened up too

    * Stick with the city scape background with the ‘obey’ and ‘marry and reproduce’. An extremely important dynamic to the movie that deserves to be included in the design…plus they look cool, and yep (sorry!) the fonts designs need to be fixed up

*The balance of imagery in #2 and #3 is awesome! Everything flows into one another extremely well. The balance in #1…not so good

Actually….should of voted #2. That bubblegum catchphrase is perfect where it is

  38. Tracy permalink

Ouch – tough crowd! I voted for #1 because as someone else pointed out, it captures the main essences of the film in one design. But the human versus alien concept should be conveyed a little more clearly; the “They” are mixed in with us. Not sure how you’d do that design-wise other than via the sunglasses. Also agreed with putting the text on the back; with the same textual perspective shown in design #2.

  39. May 18, 2009

These designs are cool but there is already a shirt out there very very similar to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th design with the same quote on it as well.

The first one is different but I’d have to say that the second one is probably the best design, even though the aliens still don’t really look right (they must be hard to draw)
i think the 4th design is cool, but that never happens in the film, so it’d be an inaccurate design in my opinion…

I think that tag line is way over used too, i think something different would be better instead of that one, even though its one of the major quotes of the film I’d like to see something different, cause that’s what Fright Rags is about right?

    still wish Jaws woulda won.

I thought the third one was easily the best. It doesn’t have the text on it — which I don’t actually mind, but I know some people do — and it has the best image with ALL of the billboards/signs visible. Great stuff! I look forward to buying one. :D

I did like #1. Though Piper holding his glasses is not needed. It just doesn’t work for me visually.

#2 is great, but I think the quote is too big. It just seems like a waste of space and it’s half the size of the actual drawing. But other than that it’s great.

#4 I really think it GREAT! The only thing of cousre is “yes” the quote shouldn’t be covered by the design. If not for that it would be an AWESOME SHIRT…

#2 is epic! Everything about the design is perfect… Really, I couldn’t have imagined a better idea myself. There is nothing wrong with text on a shirt… in fact, memorable quotes oft times make the shirt. It’s when you just put the title of the movie on the shirt… that’s where it gets lame and standard. Anyways, that quote, with that awesome font, coupled with the epic design make for a MUST-BUY!!!

Can’t wait to see the colors choice vote… hopefully there is one?
