About The People Under the Stairs

Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs (1991) uses horror to critique Reagan-era economics, following a young Black boy who breaks into his family's landlords' home only to discover they're incestuous cannibals hoarding wealth while keeping mutilated children in the basement. The film works as both effective horror and pointed social commentary about the vampiric relationship between slumlords and their tenants, with the villainous "Mommy" and "Daddy" representing predatory capitalism at its most literal. Brandon Adams gives a surprisingly nuanced child performance as "Fool," navigating a nightmare house filled with traps and secrets. While divisive on release, the film has been reappraised as one of Craven's most politically engaged works, its themes of wealth inequality and housing injustice more relevant than ever.
