About Die Hard (1988)
John McTiernan's Die Hard (1988) redefined the action genre by replacing the invincible muscle-bound heroes of the era with Bruce Willis's John McClane—a wisecracking, barefoot, vulnerable everyman who bleeds, limps, and barely survives each encounter. The film was based on Roderick Thorp's 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever, itself a sequel to The Detective, and the role was offered to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and even Frank Sinatra before Willis—then known only as a TV comedy actor—was cast for $5 million. Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber, in his American film debut, set the template for sophisticated action movie villains for decades to come. Shot at the then-unfinished Fox Plaza building in Century City, Die Hard grossed $140 million worldwide and sparked an eternal cultural debate about whether it qualifies as a Christmas movie.
