About Red Dawn (1984)

John Milius' Red Dawn (1984) tapped into Cold War anxieties with its premise of Soviet and Cuban forces invading the American heartland, met with resistance from a band of high school students calling themselves "Wolverines." The film holds the distinction of being the first PG-13 rated movie released, though its violence would likely earn an R rating today. Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, and Jennifer Grey lead a young cast that takes the material with utmost seriousness, creating genuine emotional investment in the guerrilla fighters' doomed resistance. While the politics are unabashedly right-wing, Red Dawn works as effective action cinema and became a cultural touchstone for a generation raised under the shadow of nuclear annihilation.
