About Dawn of the Dead (1978)

George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978) transformed the zombie genre from B-movie curiosity into biting social satire, using a shopping mall as both fortress and metaphor for American consumerism. Filmed at the Monroeville Mall in Pennsylvania during off-hours, the production created elaborate zombie makeups under the direction of Tom Savini, whose Vietnam War experience informed the film's graphic gore effects. The film exists in multiple cuts—Romero's preferred version, an extended cut, and Dario Argento's faster-paced European edit with a Goblin soundtrack—each offering a different experience. Dawn of the Dead became one of the most profitable independent films ever made, grossing $55 million against a $650,000 budget and inspiring countless imitators.
