Halloween II (1981) picks up immediately where the original left off, making it one of the first true "same night" sequels in horror history. Director Rick Rosenthal aimed to replicate John Carpenter's style so closely that Carpenter himself shot additional gore scenes to match the increasingly violent slasher market. The film reveals the controversial twist that Laurie Strode is actually Michael Myers' sister—a plot point Carpenter later admitted he wrote while drinking beer and has expressed regret over. Shot primarily at the Morningside Hospital in Pasadena, the film's claustrophobic hospital setting created a new template for slasher sequels and grossed $25 million against a $2.5 million budget.
