  • About Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1990-2000)

Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1990-2000) introduced an entire generation to horror through the Midnight Society, a group of teenagers who gathered around a campfire to tell scary stories that played out as self-contained episodes. Created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel for YTV in Canada before being picked up by Nickelodeon, the show was remarkably dark for children's television, featuring genuinely unsettling creatures, psychological horror, and stories that didn't always have happy endings. The series launched the careers of several young Canadian actors including Ryan Gosling, Jay Baruchel, and Neve Campbell, who appeared in early episodes before becoming major stars. With its iconic opening—the creaking door, the match strike, and the "submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society" catchphrase—the show ran for seven seasons and remains one of the most fondly remembered horror anthology series in television history.
