Cabin Fever (2002) was the feature directing debut of Eli Roth, who co-wrote it with Randy Pearlstein. Five college friends celebrate the end of exams at a remote cabin in the woods, only to be infected one by one by a flesh-eating virus that turns them against each other. Roth based the idea on a real skin infection he caught while working on a farm in Iceland. The film was a hit at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival, where Lionsgate bought it, and it went on to earn more than $20 million in North American theaters on a budget of about $1.5 million. Fans especially remember Dennis, the strange local boy who bites anyone who gets too close and shouts 'Pancakes!' mid-karate kick.
