About Godzilla (1954)

Ishiro Honda's Godzilla (1954), known in Japan as Gojira, was created as a direct response to the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Lucky Dragon 5 incident, where a Japanese fishing boat was contaminated by fallout from American hydrogen bomb testing at Bikini Atoll. The original film is far darker and more somber than its reputation suggests—it's essentially a nuclear horror film where Godzilla represents the atomic bomb itself, and its scenes of hospitals overwhelmed with radiation victims directly mirror the real aftermath of the bombings. Haruo Nakajima, the suit actor who brought Godzilla to life for 12 films, lost 20 pounds during the first production because the 200-pound latex suit was so hot and restrictive. Spanning over 35 films across seven decades, the Godzilla franchise became the longest-running film franchise in cinema history and transformed the King of the Monsters from a symbol of nuclear terror into a beloved pop culture icon.
