About It (1990 / 2017)

Tommy Lee Wallace's It (1990) brought Stephen King's 1,138-page novel to television as a two-part miniseries, and while budget limitations prevented the full scope of King's cosmic horror, Tim Curry's performance as Pennywise the Dancing Clown became one of the most terrifying portrayals of evil in television history. Curry improvised many of Pennywise's most unsettling mannerisms, including the way the clown's smile suddenly drops into something predatory, creating a character that single-handedly intensified coulrophobia in an entire generation. The first half of the miniseries, focusing on the child actors including a young Seth Green and Jonathan Brandis, is widely regarded as superior to the adult-focused second half, proving that King's story works best when seen through the eyes of terrified children. The miniseries drew 30 million viewers and remained the definitive adaptation until Andy Muschietti's 2017 theatrical version, but Curry's Pennywise has never been truly surpassed.
