About Chopping Mall (1986)

Jim Wynorski's Chopping Mall (1986) takes the simple premise of killer security robots hunting teenagers trapped overnight in a shopping mall and turns it into one of the most purely entertaining B-movies of the decade. Originally titled Killbots—a name so unappealing that the film was pulled from theaters and re-released under its catchier title—the movie was shot at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, the same mall featured in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Commando. The film features cameos from B-movie legends including Mary Woronov, Dick Miller, and Paul Bartel reprising their characters from Eating Raoul, plus one of the most memorable exploding head effects in 1980s horror. Made for under $800,000, Chopping Mall became a massive VHS hit and remains a beloved example of Reagan-era mall culture meets sci-fi horror.
