About The Blob (1988)

Chuck Russell's The Blob (1988) took the campy 1958 Steve McQueen original and reimagined it as a genuinely terrifying creature feature with some of the most impressive and stomach-churning practical effects of the decade. The film's blob was achieved through a combination of silicone, methylcellulose, and polyurethane foam manipulated by mechanical rigs, creating dissolving and absorption effects that remain more convincing than most modern CGI. The script by Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont—who would later direct The Shawshank Redemption and The Walking Dead—cleverly subverts expectations by killing off the apparent hero early, a bold structural choice that keeps audiences genuinely uncertain about who will survive. Despite a disappointing $8 million box office against a $19 million budget, The Blob has been championed by horror fans and filmmakers as one of the most underrated creature features ever made.
