Critters (1986) was the directing debut of Stephen Herek, a horror comedy about the Krites: small, furry, ravenous aliens who escape a prison asteroid and crash-land near a farm in rural Kansas. The Brown family, including mom Helen (Dee Wallace) and young Brad (Scott Grimes), must hold off the rolling, quill-shooting creatures while two shape-shifting alien bounty hunters search the nearby town for their targets. The Krites were brought to life by the Chiodo Brothers, the effects team later famous for Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Mixing real scares with plenty of laughs, the film became a home video favorite and launched a franchise of sequels and a streaming web series.
