Flight of the Navigator (1986) follows a 12-year-old boy who falls into a ravine in 1978 and awakens in 1986, not having aged a day, only to discover his disappearance is connected to an alien spacecraft that needs his memories to navigate. The film's AI companion MAX (voiced by Paul Reubens) provides comic relief while the movie explores surprisingly poignant themes of family loss and the impossibility of going home again. The chrome alien ship's liquid metal morphing effects were groundbreaking for the time and influenced subsequent science fiction design. Disney initially struggled to market the film's blend of science fiction wonder with genuine emotional weight, but it found its audience through home video and remains a touchstone for 80s kids.
