About Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995)

Ernest Dickerson's Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995) brought the beloved HBO horror anthology series to the big screen with a siege film pitting a group of strangers in a boarding house against Billy Zane's scene-stealing performance as a smooth-talking demon called The Collector. The film was the first of a planned trilogy of Crypt movies, and its practical demon effects—created by Todd Masters—remain impressive, with possessed humans sporting grotesque transformations achieved entirely through prosthetics and animatronics. Jada Pinkett Smith delivers one of the film's strongest performances as Jeryline, a parolee who emerges as an unlikely hero, while Zane improvised many of his most memorable one-liners. Though initially overlooked, the film has been reappraised as one of the best horror films of the mid-1990s, praised for its diverse cast and relentless pace.
