About Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)

John R. Cherry III's Ernest Scared Stupid (1991) pits Jim Varney's beloved rubber-faced character Ernest P. Worrell against Trantor, an ancient troll who turns children into wooden dolls to fuel his resurrection—a premise surprisingly dark for a family comedy. The Chiodo Brothers, famous for their work on Killer Klowns from Outer Space, created the practical troll effects that were genuinely frightening enough to scare a generation of kids who rented the VHS expecting lighthearted comedy. Varney, a classically trained Shakespearean actor, performed all of his own stunts and played multiple characters, demonstrating the physical comedy genius that made Ernest a household name through nine feature films. The film has become a nostalgic Halloween staple, with many fans citing it as their first introduction to horror.
