About Hardware (1990)

Richard Stanley's Hardware (1990) is a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk horror film about a military robot that reassembles itself in an artist's apartment and begins a relentless killing spree, drawing from the comic story SHOK! published in 2000 AD magazine. The film was shot on a shoestring budget in London's abandoned Roundhouse venue, with Stanley creating a convincing dystopian world through creative set design, colored gels, and an industrial soundtrack featuring artists like Ministry, Public Image Ltd, and Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister in a cameo role. Dylan McDermott and Stacey Travis deliver committed performances despite the challenging production conditions, and the M.A.R.K. 13 robot design—with its American flag paintjob and skull-like face—became an iconic image in sci-fi horror. The film's combination of body horror, environmental commentary, and cyberpunk aesthetics has earned it a devoted cult following and influenced countless post-apocalyptic films that followed.
