About Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)

Tim Burton's Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) was the director's feature film debut, and its surreal, expressionistic visual style—applied to Paul Reubens's manic man-child character searching for his stolen bicycle—launched one of Hollywood's most distinctive directorial careers. The Large Marge scene, where a seemingly normal truck driver's face suddenly transforms into a grotesque claymation monster, traumatized an entire generation of children and remains one of the most effective jump scares in a family film. Burton, hired at just 25 years old after his short films caught Warner Bros.' attention, brought a German Expressionist sensibility to mainstream comedy that nobody had attempted before. Made for $7 million, the film earned $40 million and directly led to Warner Bros. giving Burton the Batman franchise, making Pee-wee's Big Adventure one of the most consequential directorial debuts in film history.
