About Popcorn (1991)

Mark Herrier's Popcorn (1991) is a love letter to William Castle-style gimmick cinema, set during a horror movie marathon at an old movie palace where a masked killer begins picking off film students one by one as the audience enjoys films-within-the-film complete with buzzing seats and 3D glasses. The movie-within-a-movie sequences—parodies of 1950s creature features called Mosquito!, The Attack of the Amazing Electrified Man, and The Stench—are so lovingly crafted that they feel like genuine lost B-movies from the atomic age. The film features impressive practical makeup effects as the killer assumes the faces of his victims, and its celebration of the theatrical moviegoing experience feels especially poignant in today's streaming era. Though barely released theatrically, Popcorn has become a cult favorite among horror fans who appreciate its meta-commentary on horror fandom and its genuine affection for the genre.
