About Star Wars (1977)

George Lucas's Star Wars (1977) drew heavily from Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Akira Kurosawa's samurai films, and Flash Gordon serials to create a modern mythology that redefined blockbuster filmmaking and popular culture forever. The original film's groundbreaking visual effects, created by the newly formed Industrial Light & Magic in a converted warehouse, were achieved through innovations in motion-control photography, miniature work, and compositing that set standards the industry would follow for decades. The film was famously saved in the editing room by Marcia Lucas, Richard Chew, and Paul Hirsch, who restructured a chaotic rough cut into the tight, propulsive adventure audiences fell in love with—earning them the Academy Award for Best Film Editing.
