About The Running Man

The Running Man (1987) adapts Stephen King's dystopian novel (published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym) into an Arnold Schwarzenegger action vehicle satirizing reality television seven years before OJ Simpson's slow-speed chase. The film depicts a 2019 America where convicted criminals compete on a deadly game show for their freedom, presciently anticipating the rise of exploitative reality TV and the merger of entertainment with punishment. Each "Stalker" antagonist—including future governor Jesse Ventura as Captain Freedom—has a distinctive gimmick and meets an ironic end accompanied by Schwarzenegger one-liners. While drastically different from King's darker source material, the film's critique of media spectacle has only grown more relevant.
