About Back to the Future (1985)

Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale's Back to the Future (1985) was rejected by every major studio over 40 times before Universal finally greenlit it, with executives calling it either "not sexual enough" or "too sexual" depending on the studio. The production famously replaced original star Eric Stoltz with Michael J. Fox after five weeks of filming, requiring the entire movie to be reshot while Fox simultaneously worked 18-hour days filming his TV series Family Ties. The DeLorean time machine was chosen because its gull-wing doors looked futuristic, and the car's stainless steel body would help sell the idea of a "flux capacitor" needing unusual materials. The film became the highest-grossing movie of 1985, spawned two sequels, and introduced phrases like "Great Scott!" and "1.21 gigawatts" into the pop culture lexicon.
