About Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Return of the Living Dead (1985) began as a sequel to Night of the Living Dead but evolved into a punk rock horror-comedy that introduced the concept of zombies specifically craving brains. Writer-director Dan O'Bannon (who wrote Alien) created a film that's simultaneously hilarious and genuinely terrifying, featuring the memorable Tarman zombie and the tragic fate of Linnea Quigley's punk rocker Trash. The film's soundtrack, featuring The Cramps, 45 Grave, and The Damned, made it essential viewing for the punk and goth communities. Return of the Living Dead established that these zombies couldn't be killed by destroying the brain—only complete incineration works—and its bleak ending subverts every survival trope audiences expected.
