About The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) was a box office disappointment upon release, overshadowed by the family-friendly E.T. which opened just two weeks earlier, but has since been recognized as one of the greatest horror films ever made. Rob Bottin, just 22 years old, spent over a year creating the film's revolutionary practical creature effects, working such long hours that he was hospitalized for exhaustion upon completion. The film's paranoid atmosphere was enhanced by Carpenter's decision to cast only men and film in freezing conditions that made the actors' breath visible and their discomfort genuine. Based on John W. Campbell Jr.'s 1938 novella "Who Goes There?," the film explores themes of identity and trust that resonate even more powerfully in today's world of deepfakes and digital deception.
