Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) boldly attempted to transform the franchise into an anthology series with no Michael Myers, instead telling the story of an evil novelty company using ancient Celtic magic and microchips to murder children on Halloween night. The film was savaged by audiences expecting another Michael Myers slasher, but has since been reappraised as a clever, paranoid thriller with one of horror's catchiest—and most disturbing—jingles: "Eight more days 'til Halloween, Halloween, Halloween." Director Tommy Lee Wallace, who edited the original Halloween, created a uniquely atmospheric film that explores corporate evil and pagan rituals. Star Tom Atkins delivers a wonderfully weary performance as the alcoholic doctor uncovering the conspiracy.
