About Jaws (1975)

Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975) famously suffered from a malfunctioning mechanical shark nicknamed "Bruce" (after Spielberg's lawyer), forcing the young director to show the predator as little as possible—a limitation that accidentally created unbearable suspense and revolutionized how filmmakers approach the "less is more" philosophy. The production went massively over budget and schedule, with the crew battling seasickness, sinking boats, and unpredictable ocean conditions off Martha's Vineyard. Jaws became the first true summer blockbuster, earning over $470 million worldwide and keeping millions of people out of the water. The film's iconic two-note theme by John Williams, inspired by the relentless motion of a shark, is now instantly recognizable worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
