About London After Midnight (1927)

London After Midnight (1927) is cinema's most famous lost film, a silent horror starring Lon Chaney as both a Scotland Yard inspector and a vampire-like figure investigating a murder that may involve the supernatural. Chaney's makeup—featuring wire devices holding his eyes unnaturally wide and prosthetic pointed teeth—created images so striking they've been recreated and referenced for a century despite the film's disappearance. The last known print was destroyed in an MGM vault fire in 1965, and despite extensive searching, no complete copy has ever been found. The film's legendary status has only grown with its absence, with reconstruction attempts using still photographs and the shooting script allowing modern audiences to approximate what 1920s viewers experienced.
