About Lucio Fulci's The Beyond (1981)

Lucio Fulci's The Beyond (1981) is the Italian horror maestro's surreal masterpiece, following a woman who inherits a Louisiana hotel that happens to sit atop one of the seven gateways to Hell. The film prioritizes nightmarish imagery over coherent plot, delivering unforgettable setpieces including tarantulas eating a man's face, a child's head exploding in slow motion, and the eerie blind Emily wandering with her guide dog. Fulci embraced the dream logic of Italian horror cinema, creating a film that functions more like a waking nightmare than traditional narrative. Long censored and only available in butchered versions outside Italy, The Beyond received a restored theatrical release in 1998 that cemented its reputation as one of European horror's essential works.
