Don Coscarelli wrote, directed, shot, and edited Phantasm (1979) on a shoestring budget of about $300,000, with a cast and crew made up largely of his friends. Teenager Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) becomes convinced that something terrible is happening at the Morningside Cemetery mortuary, where the towering Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) is shrinking the dead into hooded dwarf slaves for another world. Mike, his older brother Jody (Bill Thornbury), and their ice cream vendor friend Reggie (Reggie Bannister) take on the Tall Man and his flying silver sphere, whose drill-tipped attack became one of horror's most famous images. Jody's black Plymouth 'Cuda became a star in its own right, and the Tall Man's chilling 'Boy!' remains one of the genre's great catchphrases. The film's dreamlike logic made it a cult classic and launched four sequels, ending with Phantasm: Ravager in 2016.
