About Motel Hell (1980)

Motel Hell (1980) takes the "secret ingredient" horror trope to absurd extremes with farmer Vincent Smith, who plants unsuspecting travelers neck-deep in his garden to season before grinding them into his award-winning smoked meats. Rory Calhoun's performance as the hospitable-yet-homicidal Vincent walks a perfect line between folksy charm and genuine menace, particularly in his climactic chainsaw duel while wearing a pig's head. The film's tagline—"It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent's fritters"—became iconic among horror fans. While marketed as straight horror, Motel Hell is actually a clever satire of American consumerism, factory farming, and rural hospitality that has only grown more relevant with time.
