Street Trash (1987) is one of the most outrageous 'melt movies' ever made, directed by Jim Muro, who later became a top Steadicam operator on James Cameron films such as Terminator 2 and Titanic. Written by Roy Frumkes, the film follows the homeless residents of a Brooklyn junkyard after a liquor store owner finds a case of decades-old booze called Tenafly Viper in his basement and sells it for a dollar a bottle. Anyone who drinks it melts into puddles of brightly colored goo. Its gooey melt effects were created by makeup-effects artist Jennifer Aspinall (with Mike Lackey), and the film's mix of gross-out gore, crude humor, and gritty New York locations made it a cult favorite on home video. A new Street Trash, directed by Ryan Kruger, was released in 2024.
